Hey all,
After being in San Deigo for a lovely visit (I really did enjoy the weather there and may have to stay in the Navy long enough to do a tour there) I am now at Ft. Benning GA, a 4 hour flight (3 hour time change, plus that blasted Daylight Savings Time) and then a two hour van ride to the base.
I am not impressed with the Army. The barracks are very old (very, very). We are way the heck back at the far end of the base a long way from anthing else Army. It seems that about 80% of the folks here are civilians that are returning from Iraq. The three guys I was with during the van ride were all Arab speakers, coming back from a tour as translators. As it turns out, the driver for the ride to the base grew up in north Minneapolis (small world).
Perhaps I have just been spoiled from having my own room all the time in the Navy. Here I am in 4 man room, although there are only three of us. I got here around 1830 and they had run out of pillows, so I had to search room to room for a spare pillow, how hard is it to have pillows???
They do have this lounge building which is open about 17 hours a day, the gym apparently is open 24 hours a day. There is a little Army Air Force Exchange Service store selling junk food, a few uniform items and a toiletries. I still haven't found the chow hall. I'll probably crash real early just to try and adjust to the new time. Right now I am praying that my time here is mercifully short. The sooner I get to Honduras the better...
